Choosing Your Wedding Style

Pinterest and the like are both your best friend and enemy at the best and worst of times. For each image you select, there are over a hundred alternatives. If you’ve been planning your wedding for some time, you know the bottomless pit that is – selecting a style for your wedding. Not only is it overwhelming, but the confusion can get the better of you, leaving you with an unidentified style, items that don’t necessarily work together and uncertainty on whether you’ve made the right decision for this one perfect day.

So how do you choose a wedding style? There are a few simple steps to follow that can help you narrow it down.

IDENTIFY YOUR PERSONALITY

This may seem obvious, but it is an undervalued skill. Your wedding style comes from you. Who you are as a person, what makes you feel happy, what your love story sounds like. Styling is a very personal thing. It’s easy to get lost in trends, but what will make your wedding timeless, is ensuring you stay true to yourself. A great exercise in identifying your personality when it comes to weddings is to put aside everything you know and write down a list of things that make you feel something, colours that resonate with you, places you’ve travelled to that make you feel like home. Then research these things outside of the realm of weddings, gather your inspiration outside of the wedding sphere and build on that.

UNDERSTATED ELEGANCE

As a couple, Christina and Zenos enjoy minimalistic elegance. Their wedding featuring black white and green allowed their personalities to shine through.

Gather Inso

Once you’ve completed the identity process, it’s time to gather your inspiration into one place. This can be dangerous, so you need to have some self control. Using planforms such as The Friend Club, Pinterest or various directories can be an excellent source to gather photos that speak to you, but it’s important to know when to start and when to stop. Ensure to separate your inspo photos into categories. A good tip is to stop at 30 photos per category. Once you have done this, let it sit for a while and revisit. Reassess what you gravitate towards.

INSPIRATION WEBSITES

Pinterest is an invaluable tool when it comes to sourcing inspiration, but it requires a lot of self-control.

Select your venue

This is a huge step in your wedding journey, but can be definitive of your style, especially if you are unsure of the direction. Usually selecting a venue is the starting point. Your venue style can help you determine whether your wedding style will be classic, romantic, moody or contemporary. Pay attention to how the light moves at the venue - plan your site visit towards the end of the day if you are having an evening celebration or earlier in the day for a lunch time wedding. The lighting will help you determine if your wedding is going to be bright and airy, or deep and moody.

VENUE LIGHTING

The way the light moves around your chosen venue at your scheduled event time will play a big role in the overall mood of your wedding.

Hire a stylist

At last, if you are struggling to define your style and need the extra help or if you know what you’re after but want the logistical process to be carried out for you, the best step would be to hire a stylist. A stylist will work with you to create an overall mood and design and will coordinate all the elements from start to finish to execute a cohesive design that feels true to you.
